ACORN nuts for all.

What’s good? This is crazy. DON’T WATCH THIS WHOLE VIDEO (unless you’re hooked on politics like me) but skim through it quickly to get the details on this ACORN investigation. You can get the main idea by watching the first 3:00 minutes and then watch from 5:30 -6:15.

A little background: The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) is a community-based organization in the United States that advocates for low and moderate-income families by working on neighborhood safety, voter registration, health care, affordable housing, and other social issues. They’ve got some problems though because some of their employees are more than happy to engage in shady activity…

Wait!! Before you go off with predictable shock and awe comments at ACORN’s actions-stop. Breathe. Briefly inform yourself about ACORN.

Then consider a couple of things.

1.  Some of the main things that ACORN does are to help people find housing through direct actions and lobbying for fair housing legislation.

2.  According to the Washington Examiner, ACORN received $53 million dollars from federal tax coffers since 1994 (note that most of it goes to housing for poor people – click HERE if you’re interested) That’s a lot of money. And…

3.  Wall street has received over $500 billion dollars in federal aid for to heal their wounds from gaming the housing system.

4.  Private military contractors in Iraq and Afghanistan such as KBR and Blackwater have cost taxpayers billions in excessive, padded billing costs.

So the political media circus is taking full advantage of this. Folks on the right are gleefully holding this up as an example of everything that we fear about the Obama Administration – excessive social programs, corruption, tax payer money going to thieves, and black people. (By the way, ACORN has fired the employees on this video and called the incidents “an attempt at ‘gotcha journalism.’”) Folks on the left are going to try to defend ACORN’s larger purpose without looking like hypocrites. Obama says he has bigger things on his mind. Yeah…like what?

Now go off. I did.

I would like to start by saying that I think aside from this incidence what ACORN is doing or supposed to be doing is great. I had never heard of them before this, and I’m happy to know there is such an organization. Unfortunately, those two women represented ACORN, and now gave the organization a bad reputation. With that bad reputation comes questioning on whether they are legit or what their purpose really is. Moreover I think it’s very sad, because people look at this organization not only as a helpful tool but more than likely as a sense of hope as well.
I get that the man and the woman pretending to be a congressman and a prostitute trying to start a brothel was to prove a point, which they did, but why? Who came up with that idea? Who really wanted to try to slander a reputation of an organization that is trying to help people get affordable housing, health care, voter registration, and other similar issues? I was absolutely in shock about the two women working for ACORN that gave illegal advice, but I’m also a little shocked about the two impersonators. Is this what the world is coming to? We have nothing better to do than impersonate felons to badger organizations that represent hope to many people. Shouldn’t we be more concerned with our economic status or the war? Furthermore, I support Obama’s statement when he said he has better things to do. He does. That was merely two women out of numerous people who work for the organization that were being idiots. That was not the whole organization standing in that room giving the “congressman and prostitute” illegal advice.
The only good I see coming out of this is that those two unbelievably stupid women got fired. Who in their right mind would not be opposed to a prostitute starting a brothel by trafficking sixteen year old girls from other countries and use the money for the congressman’s campaign, let alone give them advice on how to do it? That blows my mind. I honestly think those two women should seek psychiatric help, because there is definitely something missing in their heads. Even if they could look past the morally wrong issues of human trafficking sixteen year old girls and a congressman trying use money from a brothel to support his campaign, did no light bulbs go off in their heads about the legal issues? I’m a little concerned with ACORN’s hiring requirements at this point, and I hope they made some changes for what it takes to be an employee. All in all, what ACORN represents and are trying to do is crucial to many people, and I hope they make sure an incidence like this never happens again if not for their sake than for people’s sake that need their help.

I am a firm believer in philanthropy. I admire people who help those in need and who accept a minimum wage job for the benefit of other people. According their website, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) is a collection of community-based organizations in the United States that advocate for low- and moderate-income families by working on neighborhood safety, voter registration, health care, affordable housing, and other social issues. Although ACORN is not a “non-profitable” organization, it still rakes in minimal earnings to get by paying their employees. ACORN workers may not be paid minimum wage, and they may only become an employee because they financially need to be, not by choice. However, ACORN workers, whether they want to or not, help people who need aid.
Since 2004, ACORN has worked with the IRS to provide free tax preparation services to American families. By helping over 150,000 families, these services have generated over $86 million in tax credit refunds and over a $190 million in overall refunds from low to moderate family earnings. ACORN truly is a philanthropic organization, with the exception of two employees…
Tonja Thompson and her associate Shira were just two employees of ACORN trying to help the wrong people at the wrong time. Granted they were promoting prostitution (which I believe should be legal) and illegal immigration (which I also believe should be legal) but they were genuinely trying to help a fellow woman in need. Regardless of investigative critics saying “how often does this happen, why does ACORN still exist, this can be an entire organization of crime” it doesn’t happen often. Even if it did, who cares??? People don’t chose to become a prostitute because it’s what they aspired to be when they were younger, women are forced to do this to support themselves and their family. Why can’t tax payers help these people out? With the United States spending more than nine hundred billion dollars a year on it’s war in the Middle East, one hundred million dollars is none to compare, especially when if helps people. One hundred million dollars, there are houses on Long Island worth more than that. If, heavens for bid there was illegal businesses being aided by this tax-relief organization, what’s the big deal? In comparison to how much American’s excessively consume, this is nothing.
The only this that irked me, however, was the employees of ACORN promoting the prostitution of 15-16 year old girls from Elsalvidor. These two ACORN employees were told numerous times that the brothel the “pimp” would buy would house dozens of these under age immigrants, to me, having her know this and not say anything to this “pimp” is disgusting. After watching the ACORN video in its entirety I can barely say I was shocked. Perhaps ACORN is a legitimate company, truly in it for the low income people of society, but I think that there is a MUCH bigger issue that this video brings up. Chenjerai touches on that topic for a quick second in his response video when he discusses the “bigger picture,” things like the tax system in general and who the REAL tax game players are. Herein lies the great hypocrisy of our own government, and for us in that matter. The US tax system is complex, and possibly fatal to our own communal well being as a nation, however this is in laments terms how it goes…There are for different levels of government that people pay taxes to not including things such as school, utility, and other taxes of that sort. It ends up being around 40% of an average workers income. Although income taxation was not first established, it became fermented around the early 1860s to pay for the Civil War. After that it was all downhill for the people and all uphill for the government, including tax raises and more taxes (property, social security, etc etc)… Nowadays we have a 35% top marginal tax rate (I think?) and its instituted as a progressive tax, meaning that the rate percentage is higher for high income families. After knowing all of this, you have to consider the society on both ends, the richest governmental officials and the poorest, jobless hobos, and then throw in these stupid ACORN employees. Who is really doing the shady business of avoiding taxes and who just happened to be caught on camera doing it? Now some more info, we have a thing called the Alternative Minimum Tax, which is kind of like a secret loophole to discourage loopholes, ironic right? But lets not digress, let us return to the income taxes. SO, since this is a progressive tax, someone who makes say 50 thousand a year compares to someone who makes 150 thousand a year will have half of a rate than the 150K a year employee, meaning that the higher earner will be actually giving more than double THE PERCENTAGE rate to income tax. so like the 50k would be, I don’t know, say 5.5k income tax, while the 150k would be close to high 30k income tax. Now does that make much sense? No? Well then turn to social security, because thats really what the government’s excuse for anything tax related turns into anyway. But what I cant seem to grasp is why we are all fighting for high Social Security when, in reality, by the time we are old and decrepit that wont mean a damn thing. You honestly think that our government is going to one day bounce back from the INSANE amount of debt we are racking up EVERYDAY? Why are we so naive to believe that we should entrust our government, which is in a HUGE financial crises (and has been for some time), with our money for the future? Did a big light bulb just go off in your mind? Cause it should have. Now to tax evasion, which is the proper term for trying to not pay your taxes ILLEGALLY, unlike tax avoidance which is the phrase that very rich government employees in california who hire people JUST to find loophole ways to not pay taxes “LEGALLY” (in quotes, note).. but don’t worry, cause its legal… In 2007 the US Citizens apparently owed more than 300 BILLION dollars in unpaid taxes to the government, but I assume they were all due to ACORN, right? The funny thing about ACORN and the whole prostitute tax paying situation is that when you make unlawful income gains, they still want you to report that money, yeah right? Like people are really going to start being like, “hey government! I just sold tons of illegal drugs to minors! Just letting ya know!” .. not likely unless they are trying to put themselves in jail. The main reason I just ranted on and on about this without really touching bases on ACORN was because I think this is important information that people need to consider when looking at the big picture of tax illegality. What the people who worked at ACORN did was wrong, completely, but they just happened to be caught on camera. There are plenty of people doing the same thing (no not illegal immigrant prostitution) on the other side of the spectrum, and that is finding loopholes in a system that maybe needs to be reconsidered as well.

In checking into the website, it’s apparent that this little scandal has become quite the PR sensation for ACRON. The first thing you read is, “FIGHT BACK: THE TRUTH ABOUT ACORN”; if I didn’t know about this situation prior, ACRON just gave me a reason to read more about the humiliating incident and consequently doubt their creditability. This scenario isn’t that original. People everyday manipulate their employers and bring down the good name of the whole. I think the problem here is that ACRON might see this more often than not, hence the needed reason to inform its customers about “the truth.” Not that this is race issue, but more of an socio-economic issue: people who work for publicly funded organizations, such as ACRON, usually don’t draw-in the most educated, moral, and polished people. These jobs are usually low-paying, poorly run, and don’t involve the most pleasant tasks. Therefore, the people who work these jobs are usually doing it just for the paycheck. I would be surprised if these women even gave a damn about the true people who rely on ACRON for assistance, or the hope that this organization gives to those in need. It’s just a shame that a good idea can be jaded by bad people. I think ACRON should use this as a buying point to argue more government assistance. Saying, if ACRON had more financial support, it wouldn’t need to go looking in all the wrong places for the people they need to run their business. BUT, that is the beauty of race relations and classes such as Sam’s. Because this is a different perspective, the viewpoint we don’t always see at first. The media will use this clip as a news point, gathering bad publicity for ACRON, giving people the wrong idea about ACRON’s mission, making people complain to government who funds ACRON, forcing the government to retract its ACRON designated aid – all of which is wrong.

On the side of race, I don’t think color was a part of this at all. The Enron executives were immoral, educated, and very, very, white. If anything, I would give these women a break because although it may have been the misguided use of government dollars, the few corrupt Enron officials were using innocent people’s money maliciously. I am confused why they were oddly sympathetic to a pimp and his prostitute, but maybe they just thought their lives were rough enough; and maybe didn’t feel like stepping into a counseling role that day? Although this situation reveals a cruel reality, people’s tax dollars also get put toward things such as a new dining room set for the White House. If I had my choice, give it to pimp and hoe.

After I saw this video, I was completely shocked and in disbelief. This video really made the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) look bad. Even though the two actors tried it in various locations, Baltimore was the only place that showed corrupt employees in their video. I think it is wrong that these two actors went out with the idea in mind that they wanted to find corrupt employees and take a video of them. They should have told the employees they were taping them instead of doing it sneakily. I know this would not have caught the corruptness of the employees, but I don’t think it is ever right to do something like taking a video of employees without their consent.

I live fifteen minutes from Baltimore and found this video really upsetting. Baltimore is already looked down upon for its crime and murder rate. This video just made Baltimore look even worse. I know there are corrupt people out in the world there trying to out-smart the government, but people rarely catch them in action. The employees got fired, but it really sucks that now the organization is going to be looked down upon. When I pay my taxes to the government, I don’t want to think that my money is going towards starting brothels or supporting prostitution. The overall goal of the committee is great, but not if it has employees that do the stuff that I saw in the movie.

This company is supposed to help people in need to start a new life and be able to have a house but instead it is supporting people to make illegal money and start a brothel. I don’t understand how two trained employees could even think about telling someone who came in dressed how she was the things they told her. This is a government funded organization. I don’t see how two people, one dressed like a prostitute, even got pass the front desk let alone into the meeting room to explain their case. There are so many people in the country who could use this money and for them to even think about giving it to a prostitute to bring in underage girls illegally into the country and use them for prostitution is beyond me.

Not only did this video make the organization look bad, but it also made African-American people look bad. They might have been just trying to help them out and maybe even make illegal money themselves, but still, there are rules to be followed in a government organization like this. I would never even think about doing something like this. I would be worried about someone finding out that I helped a prostitute and told them things that went against government policy.

When I first saw this video I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I thought to myself that this is crazy era that we are living in. Who would believe that two worker from the Assoication of Community Oraganization for Refrom Now (ACORN). The purpose of ACORN is to help low income family in find affordable housing, health care promote wellness in the community and find solution to social problem that effect the community! Basically the organization task is to help the community. But I guess not everyone in the organization has that same concept or goal in mind. It is shocking that these ladies were willing to participate in the development of a brothel, support immoral and illegal activities that destroys communities and devalues with resource that were meant for embracing wellness and support the development of the communities.

I wonder what these two employee stood to gain from what they were doing. What were they after!! What gave them the drive to go ahead to support this type of an act like this As African American those two workers should of understood the implication of what they were supporting. They would been destroying innocent lives and helping bring back a system that would support individual greed. Slavery was a system that depressed and scared the African American communities. For them to embraces these act in this day of age is just seem to be inhuman. Events like this makes we wonder do human being ever learn from the mistakes of the past and when we will understand basic human rights.

I feel sorry for the ACORN organization because they will judge based the act of a two individual. There no way that knew that could of known that there were individual in there organization who had this type of mind set

  7. Bleeding Heart Liberal says:

I almost find it offensive, that the entire organization has to take the flak for two of its employees, because they were giving out advice on how to preform illegal activities. Sure prostitution is pretty raw, but I mean how many Wal-mart employees probably do drugs, or even sell drugs? Or would tell you where to buy said drugs if they thought you weren’t a narc. Would Wal-Mart Face the same criticism? No, I can guarantee you they wouldn’t. This strikes me as a thinly veiled excuse to attack social programs, because the wealthy hate nothing more than for poor people to be able to afford food or medicine. Its also a lot easier to claim that prostitution or even selling drugs is morally wrong (which in itself is subjective), when you aren’t in a situation where its a viable means of earning money. A happy dictator is one whose people are too stupid or lazy to question the legitimacy or effectiveness of his decrees and demands.
I guess “blatantly wrong” as it has been put in previous comments just means unacceptable to mainstream society or against the law. Keep in mind Dred Scott vs Sandford was on the law books for a long time. I mean, hell prostitution is legal in most European countries. And for anyone whose actually read the Kevin Bales book, he points out that when it was outlawed in Thailand it forced most of the self employed women into brothels, and into abusive situations where they had no discourse other than to take the abuse. Now, this doesn’t mean I approve of prostitution, or brothels. But whats disgusting about this case isn’t the prostitution itself. At least the way I see it. Its the fact they were going to force underage girls to do it, in theory. Be morally outraged at the right problems. Its like finding the fact a thief is wearing white shoes after labor day offensive, and not the fact he just robbed a 90 year old woman of her welfare check’s.

“Its not enough that I succeed, everyone else must fail.” – Genghis Khan

Getting back to the point at hand, America has some sort of twisted hatred of social programs, and the poor in general. For some reason poverty is considered a personal failing, despite the fact that its logistically impossible for everyone to be rich. If its between giving this group a bit of money to operate and occasionally have them hire some poor saps who can’t realize they’re being jived and giving Blackwater a multi-billion dollar contract they’ll just fuck up again. I’m totally in favor of risking a little bit of money on ACORN. Or maybe increasing their budget so they can actually be a bit more picky on who they hire. So this doesn’t happen again.
I would argue almost any company or group could use more oversight and regulations. Being shocked that somehow someone in this group isn’t quite up to standards just strikes me as naïve. In this case ACORN did the right thing and fired the offenders, its a human resources issue of the organization, and nothing more.

I feel really bad for the people in ACORN who actually do want to help good people. I mean, these two women really messed things up for ACORN and it is hard for anyone to not think about this particular situation when the name ACORN comes up. But then again, I do not believe that many people in the organization of ACORN really do follow the rules. When it comes to helping people, sometimes people set aside too much of the negative traits people have, just because they feel bad for them and want to help them. This situation, unfortunately, makes the people who feel like having these social organizations and giving them money is not worth it, makes them look right. Seriously though, helping a pimp and a prostitute? What were those two women thinking?! In this case, it does not even matter how much money the organization of ACORN got compared to those at Wall Street and all that political stuff, because look what they are doing and look at who they are helping. If they did not have much money, then wouldn’t they carefully choose those that they helped? I guess not…and it is so sad. I really want to be on their side, especially as a minority who is passionate about helping others, but I truly can not be.
Again, it really upsets me that those ignorant people who feel that giving money to underprivileged people is not a good idea, and pretty much a waste of time, look right. It is kind of like a “I told you so” for them. And of course, people fail to recognize what successful organizations do for the less fortunate, and just blow up the ones like ACORN.
I know that the ACORN workers in the video were fired, but of course that does not really matter. I am sure that the company will be very closely looked at and monitored. What I am wondering though, is what other shady things ACORN has done and what happened in those situations? How many things have they gotten away with and what were their punishments?
Overall, watching this video really just sucked. I would always like to be on the black people’s, or minorities side, just because I am one, but to keep things fair I know that I always can not be, especially with cases like this. Argh, it makes me so upset! I also love how this all leads back to Obama in a way. “Oh, Obama is going to try to help all of the black people”, hmm, I doubt that. Like usual, he will probably just say he has bigger issues or whatever it is he says, and I really do wonder what those issues are! Anyhow, I love Obama but I think people are gettingt the wrong idea about him and helping all of these minorities and stuff. I mean, there is only so much one can do, it is not like his entire administration is black! I am sure some of them have some good ol’ Southern views!

I feel like it’s really hard to take a position on ACORN and what appears to be its corruption. On one hand, I feel like it’s the taxpayer’s right to take any organization which is corrupt and demand that it be reformed. I’ve watched enough news, along with the video, to know that some ACORN employees are informing people about how to get underage sex workers into the country (and how to claim them as dependents on their taxes). I’ve also seen footage of ACORN employees trying to turn being a prostitute into a legitimate career to put on a tax form. During the election there were all kinds of controversy about their techniques for registering voters, and allegations of registering non-existent voters. These are obviously unacceptable behaviors by any organization, let alone one which receives federal funding, but the techniques which were used to expose many of these behaviors are unacceptable. How many times did these people go in with their hidden cameras and no unacceptable behavior occurred? This probably occurred pretty often, but why would Fox News want to report it? It’s pretty typical for the media to only focus on the negative aspects of anything. There is no such thing as unbiased reporting. How often does the news focus on the good things that any organization does? Along with, as the blog clearly pointed out, the fact that so many people are insisting that Barack Obama is attempting to change the United States into a socialist nation, and will spend an excessive amount of government money on social programs, and corrupt ones at that. No one would argue that what those few ACORN employees were doing was right, but that cannot be the only thing that we focus on about the organization. Helping people find housing, especially at a time like this when so many people are losing their homes, seems to be a pretty important. Every point that was made about government spending on other programs (blackwater, economic bailouts, etc) is legitimate, but I don’t think it’s the right argument here. When you’re a kid, everyone’s taught that while most people are good, there are always a few “bad apples” that we have to be wary of (it’s what your parents tell you when they teach you not to talk to strangers!) You can’t throw that whole ideology away simply because we’re adults now. Men and women in the military are accused and convicted of rape and murder – but we would never stop revering the United States military simply because some people do some pretty terrible things. The same goes for doctors, policemen, firemen and all of those other heroic professions that kids dream of becoming. Some people do some pretty inappropriate things. It’s not an issue of race, or of social organizations, it’s just the idea that there will always be some “bad apples.” These people have been fired, and ACORN is trying to redeem itself. Taxpayers have the right to investigate wrongdoings among organizations receiving their money. But hidden cameras and refusing to respect when an organizations takes steps to rectify their wrong doing, isn’t right.
