Let’s not forget about skin darkening practices—and the premature aging, painful burning, sun poisoning and skin cancer that result because light-skinned people often don’t feel good about themselves when they’re “too white.” As a white person myself, this is a refrain I’ve heard many times—and one that taught me that it was normal to put oil on my skin and swelter in the summer sun even though the act made me cranky and uncomfortable. But I thought I was moving closer to a standard of beauty that I needed to attain. So I did it—as do many like me.

And let’s not forget about the orange-y complexions that result when white people bake themselves in space age tanning ovens all winter to maintain their “color.” What do we make of this? What do we think white people are trying to accomplish while dark skinned people have the idea that they should be lighter? Who are white people emulating?
And what keeps all of us from ever really juxtaposing these practices of whitening and darkening our skins? Are we afraid to conclude that human beings are just sad creatures who are never satisfied with what they have inherited no matter what the power politics and hegemonic context in which they live?

This situation definitely proves that most people are never fully satisfied with what they have. Many people who are light-skinned try to tan all the time in order to make their complexion darker. While on the other hand, many people who are dark-skinned use skin whitening products in order to make themselves a lighter complexion. People do this because they feel that this is making them more attractive than they are naturally. I’m light-skinned and when I was younger, I would always try to tan a lot in the summer time because I felt that would look better if my skin tone were darker. I would never go to the extreme of going to a tanning booth however. I would just always try to bake in the sun for a long period of time. I think that people need to just except and be happy with who they are. At this point in my life I am extremely more comfortable with myself and I do not wish to be a darker complexion anymore. A lot of people joke around and call me “high yellow” skin complexion and it does not bother me at all, as it probably would when I was younger.
It is very unfortunate that so many people are uncomfortable with themselves and they try to change their skin tone: the little girl in the story is a good example of a situation like this gone wrong. I would be afraid of even going into a sun tanning bed in fair of getting severe burns and/or developing skin cancer. A lot of celebrity women as well as regular women put on make-up on their faces that makes the skin a lighter tone and for most cases it doesn’t make sense to me because they look better with their natural complexion. Many pictures of celebrity women are airbrushed to make them a lighter complexion and it just doesn’t make sense to me. This is the case in a lot of the cover girl ads, and to me the women look better when the picture is not airbrushed.
There are many cases where people are just never fully satisfied with the cards that they are dealt. A good friend of mine lived in New York and he was moving to Pennsylvania and he was excited because he thought that he would like living in PA so much more. So when he finally moved up to PA he didn’t like it much and he wished that he were back in New York. A few years later he was about to move down to Florida and he was extremely excited because he thought that he would like it much better than living in Pennsylvania. So when he finally moved to Florida he absolutely hated it and claimed that he would rather live in New York; he also said he would even prefer Pennsylvania over Florida. So this case right here just proves the point when it is said that we are never fully satisfied with what we have.
