The cartoon is by Marty Two Bulls, Sr., a Native American cartoonist who is saying something rather instructive about the recent Senate apology–the official U.S. Apology–to American Indians. Thought it might be worth reflecting on it today–Columbus Day. It’s an odd day to celebrate and my guess is that most of us would feel extremely uncomfortable doing so if we took just a bit of time to reflect on the history and current life conditions of Native Americans in both the United States and elsewhere in the Americas.
But we don’t…because THAT would require us to rethink the official story by which we live and that allows us to get on with our lives day after day and not feel some kind of way about the blood and bones that are buried beneath the land that we now own and the structures we now call “home.” And by “we” I guess I mean those of us who do not claim ancestry to some indigenous people or culture.
Genocide. There’s that unfortunate word again. Alcoholism and addiction. Unemployment. Reservations. Suicide. Rape. Violent attacks. So the apology is just a first step???
Take a few minutes (probably 6-8 total) and read the document–the apology. Unless you are Native American, it’s coming from you, afterall, and so you probably ought to at least know what it says.

After reading the apology letter, it just so empty. It’s like this doesn’t change a freaking thing so why does it even matter. It just seems like some lame attempt at putting the past behind everyone so all the white people can just feel better like, well we apologized in a formal document so it’s all fine now. I love the line about moving together towards a brighter future because it’s just like wow easy for you to say you are already that brighter future that you did not allow those people to have. I guess I just do not understand why this has taken so long it just doesn’t mean anything anymore it’s like too late. I think something physical needs to be done not just some stupid letter. We need to find a way to allow Native Americans to have the same life as anyone else. I think a lot of them feel stuck on the Indian reservations with things like alcoholism and suicide are extremely common. They should have the ability to live just like any other American. It is so grossly ironic that they are the first American but they are treated the worst out of any of us currently. It is just unbelievable that their struggles are still occurring so many hundreds of years later. I don’t understand why when all the segregation with the Indians was happening we didn’t realize what we were doing. It’s so obviously a horrible thing to do to a group of people I don’t understand why we it took us until this lame apology to realize that what we did was horribly wrong. It just seems very unprovoked and very random all the pain and suffering that we inflicted on the native Americans. They did nothing to us and we just came in and took their land. That is one thing in itself, but then to stick them on reservations and segregate them from the rest of the country is entirely different and makes the entire situation a lot worse. I think the letter makes it entirely worse. It’s almost like a joke, like we’ve known for awhile what we were doing but it took us this long to type up a letter because we really didn’t care for the past few hundred years. It’s like worse now, like a slap in the face. I am not a native America but I think if I were I would be completely disgusted by it. I would be extremely angry to that all I got for everything was a stupid, unfeeling letter. It doesn’t even have any real regret or remorse in it. It sounds like a stupid legal document, it’s almost hard to read because it’s so unfeeling I just wanted to skim over it really quickly.
