Wow, this is ridiculous. I feel like people of color think it is okay to be racist to white people because "our people were oppressed by whites for so long, they deserve it." However I think it's wrong to try to "get back" at white people using the same method we thought was unfair to us. So in regards to the video of the girls who had to leave their high school because they were taunted about their race, I think they should have taken the case to court. Also, I think whether a person is racist or not has a-lot to do with how their parents raise them. Parents should be doing their part to educate their children about how to co-exist with one another. If the school is predominantly a race then the administrators are less likely to do something about the racism problem. This would be relevant in the case with the White teacher and the students of color. The administrators are ignorant and should be fired from the school. However they may have said that it’s “their culture” because the parents probably have that mind set towards white people. These and other acts of discrimination lead to bigger things. Take a look at the shooting at Virginia Tech just a couple of years ago. If you torcher people, even if it is just through words, it will get to them, maybe not right away, but there will be a point where they snap and then something like the mass murders at Virginia Tech will occur. I went to a racially diverse high school and saw acts of racism from one person to another but not to these extremities. Most of the time people said racist things jokingly but sometimes people may take it seriously. I am not sure if this certain incident I witnessed was based on racism but I know what I saw. I was driving home one day and then I see I mass amount of people rushing across the street to where I am driving and I see that there is a fight going on. Of course people like to watch fights but I guess it is okay if it is a one on one fight. The one I saw was not a fight, it someone getting “jumped.” A Hispanic boy was on the ground, being kicked, punched, and stepped on and people just stood around watching. I was horrified by what I saw. The thing is that this boy was beat up by Black people, not White people, but BLACK people. Racism should not be allowed anywhere; we say we're far more advanced in logical thinking and technology than past civilizations but personally, I do not see it.

I lived in Kuwait all my life and came to Penn State for my undergrad. I was scared when I came here. I didn’t know anyone here; I have never visited Penn State before I got here. I graduated with a class of 95 and I come to a university with 40,000 students. I’m from India and I was scared when I came here because I never had American friends before. I was afraid of the fact that how people are going to look at me. I pledged a business fraternity and now I have a lot of friends on campus. A lot of them told me to take soc 119. I can name at least 15-20 of my friends who told me to take this class because it has changed them and also changed the way they look at everything. I decided to take the class. This class is awesome. We are four weeks into this semester but this class has already taught me some many things. Things that I never even thought about were talked about in class and it changed my whole point of view. Last class Sam talked about how anyone can explain the inequality in the world. He talked about how white, black and brown people could be differentiated without looking at the physical features. I guess there is no explanation for that and it really opened my eyes and made me think about it. Soc 119 is the first class I am taking with Sam and I think that I have learned the most in this class than any other classes I have taken. Other professors basically teach you how to do stuff but Sam is someone that makes you realize and think about stuff which I had never thought of. Honestly, this is the only class I enjoy going to this semester, I actually look forward to what Sam has to offer. I know that this blog was posted at the end of the semester and was meant for students who were getting done with this class but I just want to say that I have been in this class for four weeks only and I have already learned so much. Another topic which I found very interesting was when Sam discussed about how white people want to get a tan and how black or brown people want to become white by using creams. It really made me think of the human nature. No one is happy with what they have or what they are. It is one’s human nature to be like someone else around you and yet there are all these race related problems in the world. I am really interested in what Sam will talk about in class throughout the semester. I can already say that this is going to be one of my all time favorite class and professor.
