I’m struck by how it is that someone would think that this “game” is a good idea. Of course, I’m also struck by how it is that people think that violent shoot-em-up video games represent a positive step forward for humanity. (But since I seem to be in the minority about that, I’ll just assume that it’s me that is out of alignment with my culture.) This particular video game, however, defines “off the hook” if anything ever could. I suppose that somebody will argue that this video game could offer potential rapists an outlet so that they don’t have to actually assault someone. But in truth, I don’t think some outside-the-box psychologist is behind this game. I really just want to know who thinks of something like this and then can find him or herself sitting across the table from their mother or sister or daughter sharing a meal.
In any case, check this out. And judging by the first few comments, it’s going to be easy to say “this is sick and disgusting” and then make some anti-Japanese comment. However, it strikes me that this is symptomatic of some larger and deeper process that is occurring in the world and that is connected to us all.
And one more thing…how many of you men reading this would play this game with your male friends and a couple of beers? Honestly.
Initially when I watched this video, I was completely disgusted by the game content and how that can be allowed in the popular culture of Japan. I though, who is the target market here? Who are these people that like to "escape" their everyday lives by raping video game characters? After thinking about my own experience with video games, however, I can see this in a little bit different light. I have grown up playing video games my whole life. I mainly play sports games but I have also owned and played many "shoot-em-up" games which focused on violence and crime. While I played these games, the thought of actually going out and killing people never crossed my mind. It simply was mindless entertainment that, rightly or wrongly, I found very entertaining. With the advent of violent video games has come the blame on them for violence among youth in America's culture. I do not agree with this at all. I think there are always going to be outlets for people, especially youth, to read about taboo subjects such as sex or violence in a sensationalized manner. When parents of these children blame the games for their children's actions, I can't help but think, where were the parents the whole time? As I said, there are always going to be socially inappropriate things that people are interested in and that seep into popular culture. I think it is the duty of parents to teach their kids what is right from wrong, what is real vs. what is fantasy, etc…
That being said, I am disgusted by these Japanese video games. Although it goes against what I mentioned earlier, I can't help but wonder what constitutes "going over the top" for video game content. To me, this seems over the top. But to many others violent video games go over the top, so it is certainly a very subjective topic. What I am more surprised by, is that there has never been a law suit against any of these video game companies citing Negligent Infliction of Emotional or Physical damage when a child's actions have been "influenced" by a game. By U.S. law, media must exercise "due duty" when publishing their products, and must refrain from publishing anything that would, under reasonable circumstances, lead to a criminal act. As I said before, I don't think the video games are to blame but I am very surprised to learn that the Courts have not said otherwise yet. I am sure within the next few years, an American video game will "go over the top" and this issue will come up in court.
Overall, I do not know what to think about these types of video games. I think it is a very touchy subject to restrict freedom of speech/expression, just because a video game focuses on a taboo subject matter. Because video games are so focused on attracting minors, though, I think there is some room for restriction on these games in the coming years.

The interactive game based on rape is a pretty disturbing glimpse into fetish culture. It falls into line with games like Grand Theft Auto and Call of Duty that glamorize violent and degenerative behavior via virtual realities. However, in order to produce a video game of such importance that CNN is compelled to run a special report on it, there must be a market in which to sell the product. As with all media and consumer goods, the public is what drives innovation and new frontiers to be developed. In other words, this game wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t being consumed by a population. Like gangster rap and heavy metal music, video games tend to be representational of the cultures producing and consuming them. This is not to say that Japan is a morally depraved culture; in this age of technological globalization video games are a universally injected drug into the veins of our youth. This is to say that the first world culture could use an examining to realize why rape has become an object of gamer fascination. In situations of controversy and free speech, silencing the accused is never beneficial. Therefore, the call from various groups to ban games featuring rape, either as a byproduct of game play or as a main goal, are misguided and reactionary.
I think the gangster rap example is particularly related. Out of catchy hip hop in the late 80’s came a new form of violent, incendiary music that was both controversial and strikingly honest. Rappers sang songs about killing police officers and slapping bitches as if it were culturally acceptable, all to a chorus of critics concerned with the effect the music would have on youth and society. Calls for censorship and bans came in flocks. Indeed, most of the music was reckless, delivering messages that were geared for violence. However, some artists and albums were spot on in their description of life as a poor black person living in poverty. What was accomplished, regardless of the implications, was a picture of a life so desolate and real that it sparked outrage by people not even living it. These were voices that needed to be heard in order to provoke change or at least recognition. Most importantly, many of these rappers were and probably are unaware of the role they play as defenders of free speech. They are most likely just producing the brutal music that attracts listeners. Nonetheless, one cannot pick and choose free speech. It allows society to fully understand life as it is instead of pushing unsavory details underground. A video game glorifying rape has no merit as artistic expression, but it does offer insight into what people are viewing and experiencing. The producers are most likely not “good” people; but they do have the right, the duty, to show the rest of the world how “bad” they are.

I know that Japan has been known for many games and other products with pornographic content, but I never knew that they had any games such as this one, incorporating rape. I’ll have to repeat what has already been said before and what Sam doesn’t want us to say, and that is that I am disgusted and disappointed by this game and its existence and popularity. What a shame that some people have fun and get pleasure from playing something like this. This definitely normalizes rape, of no promotes it. In today’s world, when we should be doing EVERYTING to STOP rape, we are producing games like there. Unacceptable. Many women and even little girls are being raped every day all over the world. How can anyone not have any shame to play a game like this? I can’t help but wonder whether, let’s say a man, would enjoy this game after he found out that his wife or daughter has been raped. When I think about the fact that there are games like this one out there, all I can think is that we’ve got a population of people with chicken brains. What ‘normal’ and intelligent person without a sexual addiction/rape problem would want to play and enjoy such game?
As shocked as I am, this is not the first time that I have heard of something of this nature. I remember hearing that there is apparently a website that lets you play a real life rape game. Two people sign up and then the person who wants to get raped, leaves his/her address and detailed directions of how they want the rapist to brake in and how they’d like to get raped. So then that person breaks in and ‘rapes’ them. Apparently some people get a high off of not only raping, but also getting raped. And I understand that they may not be able to help themselves, but why make such public games and websites that promote rape and make it seem like it’s ok? I wish people would just really think first before they created things like that. I wish people cared about rape victims and their families. I wish they could just feel the physical pain that those women felt while they were raped, at least for a second. And just for a moment, I wish they could feel the emotional pain and scars that those women acquired. Maybe then they would care, maybe then they would stop. Maybe then the world would be just a bit of a better place. It’s pure ignorance that keeps this all going. Someone needs to do an intervention on these people and educate them about rape. Maybe then people will stop creating and playing these games..

I am somewhat a fan of shooting games like Call of Duty, even though they are based on violence, because I actually like the strategy and good guy/bad guy aspects. That said, I think these “rape games” are in a different, totally disturbing category, and it’s pretty wild to know there are people who actually pay to play them. Now I actually feel better about myself playing shooting games when there’s this crazy group out there playing gruesome rape-to-win games.
It’s hilarious for anyone to say that this kind of game would help potential rapists vent their desires without actually raping anybody. I really doubt that deviant people could be satisfied with virtual rape. The way I see it, violent, pornographic games are only going to fuel sick desires to do this in real life. I wonder if fans of these games have a voyeurism thing going on and feel safe watching and playing sick games as part of a really unhealthy lifestyle. I also wonder how game creators would respond to news that their games provoked somebody to rape someone.
I’m not a violent person, yet I play shooting games. I suppose you could argue that an individual isn’t a rapist nor does he (or she) want to rape somebody but enjoys playing rape games. But when you think about that, rape is just plain creepy. How would anybody get joy out of that kind for forced brutality? At least in the shooting games I sometimes play, there are goals other than killing. You play to win the battle or war or territory. How does somebody win a rape game? Do you have to get away with it? When you think about someone you care about getting beaten and raped, there’s no way a game like that could be okay to play.
To answer the last question Sam asks, I honestly would not play this video game with a bunch of my male friends. I wouldn’t even watch “normal” porn (without violence) with my friends. That just seems so weird to me and not much of a bonding experience with my buddies. If these responses were anonymous, I think there might actually be some guys out there who would do this, but maybe only for a sick laugh. I don't mean to laugh at the fact that women are being raped, but more so because games like this are actually being created in the business world. I think (hope) most people would not buy this stuff but would laugh at those who buy and play it.
I know I keep comparing shooting games and rape games, and I am okay with the former but not the latter. I can think of a few reasons why. First, the war games I play feature players who are armed and ready for battle. There’s strategy involved, like I said, and the fight is not a surprise to anyone. Rape games are vicious and pointless. They are about someone exerting power over somebody weaker and hurting someone who is innocent and unarmed and who didn’t expect it. It’s not a fair fight and it’s sick and illegal.

Video games are an escape from reality. People play video games to get away from their everyday lives and become someone they want to be in reality. This is why these "rape" video games are so troubling to me. Why would anyone want to escape into a fantasy world of rape. Rape is not a joke, it isn't funny or harmless. It is the same as killing a person. Rape victims experience a lifetime of pain and shame. Why do people want to play in a fantasy that brings harm to other people.
I personally think that any video games that involve killing or rape should not be sold. I have to admit that I have played Grand theft auto and shot innocent people to get their cash, but after playing the game I realized how stupid I was. Why would i waste my time in this virtual reality of stupidity when I can live in reality. Why waste your life away in front of virtual characters?
Many people think that video games are harmless. This is often true but their are many exceptions. There are so many people that killed family members and other people after playing video games. Virtual reality can manipulate a persons mind into taking stupid actions. I was just watching a show about the youngest murderers and 50 percent of them killed after playing violent video games. They killed their family members to reenact the game and many other innocent people. What has our world come to when a ten year old has the capability of killing his own flesh and blood. I find this completely ridiculous.
These rape games also have the potential of bringing on serious consequences. One person made a comment that "after playing a video game it isn't like I want to go out and kill people and have sex with prostitutes like in the game grand theft auto". I understand where this person is coming from but he has to realize that although he probably wont take such action there are many people who cant distinguish virtual reality from every day life. After playing these video games for long enough they decide to bring the fantasy into the real life. This is when the "fun" games that don't seem to be harmful result in fatal consequences.
After all the killings that took place after other violent video games I am scared about how this video game will impact society. Will men go around raping women, thinking thats okay? Japan needs to stop producing such horrid games and we as a nation of intelligent people should stop buying them. The only reason these games are still being produced is because there are people who buy them. If no one was interested in this game it wouldn't be on the market.

This clip outraged me but it also made me think about video games in general. I think the content of the video games says a lot about the morality of the world. I personally believe that the message this video game is sending is wrong and when they are played them they are exploiting women. I also believe that anyone who does not have a problem with these and anyone who plays them have seriously become desensitized to at least one of the true horrors of the world and needs their brain checked. These games have no place in a moral society and I think we should be doing everything we can to stop their circulation. In addition, I was appalled by the response of the individuals who were featured on this clip. The fact that a woman can find pleasure out of sexually molesting another woman says a lot about the current state of the morality of the world. And beyond the ties that bind women to one another, this is a human issue. It would be just as perverse if a man were to find pleasure from playing these games. We wonder why we treat each other so poorly and have no regard for one another. Our true attitudes are reflected by the existence of these games; and it is a poor reflection on all of us. Not only the game makers and the players, but those of us who sit and allow it to continue are at fault as well. Furthermore in relation to other video games such as violent ones it is true that it doesn’t cause as much as an uproar as this seems to have. The people in the clip may think that means that we shouldn’t make such a big deal about these sexually explicit video games, but I beg to differ. Look at the state the world is in. Wars, crime and violence run rampant, maybe the violent videogames we have allowed ourselves to become desensitized to have something to do with that. Should we become the same way about sexual violence? Will the day come when my children must walk down the street in broad daylight with the fear of being raped by some ten year old who grew tired of simulations and longed for the real thing? The world is in a bad enough state as it is. We must do what we can to salvage what little morals and humanity we have left. If we continue to allow the forces of hate and violence to run rampant in our society, we will soon lose the beauty that is being human. The compassion, love, and respect that we owe to one another as human beings will be lost. A great man once said “You were born a person; with great difficulty, you became human.” We must continue to fight the good fight for all of ‘human’ity.

Videogames over the past decade have caused a lot of controversey. When you look at this game "Chain Trap", a lot of people in the United States will definitley speak their mind. If you want to know how a game like this could be produced, it is quite easy. Japan is a leading country in producing videogames. Another thing is that the businesses in Japan have a different work society too. When you get a job in Japan you dedicate your life to it and when your boss takes you out to the bars or strip clubs you are kind of obligated to go. To go off of this, it is of no surprise to me that this game would be produced because they know it would sell. Another reason that a lot of people wont know is that Japan was one country that helped finance the prostitution trade. Business men from Japan would go on trips to Taiwan and go to these Brothels to have sex with young women. Since they do this by groups and not just one man, I can only believe that these men and their younger siblings might have the same mentality. This could be a major factor in why this game has the potenial of selling so many copies. I am not trying to say that this game has the right of being in the market because it doesnt. This game did get recalled and the company did take the game off the shelves because they were recieving why to many complaints. This is not the only game out there that should be recieving all the attention though. If people are going to go after this game because of the raping of women, then why are people not going after the most prolific game that is one of the top sellers in the videogame market,Grand Theft Auto. I know that Grand Theft Auto probably recieved their share of complaints, but why has it not been taken off the shelf yet like Chain Trap from Japan. In grand Theft Auto you can have sex with prostitutes anyone you like especially cops. All of these things are right up there with raping women. I onlu played Grand Theft Auto for one day and got sick of it becuase I did not understand the point of it. There are a lot of violent video games out there in todays marketm but these games do not make people violent people. I have read studies on this before and the kids that are violent have either a psychological disorder or had a bad youth growing up. It was hard to relate violent videogames to the actions of the youth. Altough something like this Chain Trap game being sold to a 14 or 15 year old that might not know any better may think that there are no pentalties for this.

These video games are unreal. I don’t understand why anybody would want to play a video game where the main objective is to rape somebody and torture them. The only thing that is going to result from people playing these video games is the actual thing happening. People may argue that its better that these perverts do it in the game rather than in real life, however at the same time it is only feeding their desire to want to do it and for them to want to go out and do it for real. These games are acting on sick perverted people’s pleasures and it really makes you wonder what our society has come down to that we have to make these kinds of games now. What is it teaching our kids? That it is ok to rape somebody and hurt them…it’s the cool and fun thing to do. That’s messed up and it is the last thing we should be teaching our kids. However at the same time all the other video games out there are just as bad and corrupting kids just the same amount…however we don’t see too many people up in arms about the fact that you can shoot an old lady with a bazooka or kill thousands of people in tortures ways. The thing that really makes me wonder is why our society feeds off these games so much? You see people standing in lines for days in order to own one of these games and then to sit there and play that games for hours upon hours. What is the fascination that the world has in harming and killing people? It is just making our society more corrupt and telling people that it is ok to do these things in the game because it is against the law in reality. Well there is a reason that it is against the law and people should understand that. If it was something that was good for us and wasn’t going to harm us then it would be legal…but it’s not. So where do we draw the line on it being ok to portray this stuff in games and what people can’t portray in games? What will the end result be on the effect on kids and what they will grow up to want to do and think is ok to do? People really need to think about the consequences that these games are going to have on our society. Even when they are playing these games, what sick fascination do people have in being able to do these things? It’s as if they wish they could do it to other people in real life but they can’t so they do it in a video game. Well it’s wrong and people need to think twice before they support these games by playing them and buying them.

I actually saw this on the news the other night and was just as shocked the second time I watched it as I was the first. I just can’t fathom that any one would think that a game like this could possibly be considered entertaining. It is just beyond me how a game that the main objective to rape or sexually assault someone could be fun. People never recover from events such as rape or sexual abuse. I think it is completely disgusting to down play something that so many people struggle with getting over every single day.
I also have a hard time dealing with killing or war games. I don’t think there is anything fun about the situations that actual people are actually in. However, I can deal with those a little bit because it is pretty difficult for a lot of the people who play those games to actually get a hold of those weapons. I still do not agree with them though.
In the case of these games it is allowing young kids or teenagers to see them selves in these situations and may just make them cross boundaries that should not be crossed. Teens that live in the city most likely ride the subway a lot, that doesn’t mean that they should stalk or grope an attractive female that they see standing alone on the train. This though is terrifying to me. I just can not imagine how a game like this could possibly be fun.
Honestly it probably arouses some people to be able to play this type of game. Seriously, I can not understand how cartoons who have gags in their mouth or there hands and feet tied and bound could possibly be arousing. Not that I condone all porn, but I don’t necessarily disapprove of it… WATCH PORN if you need to be aroused, at least those people engage in those activities willingly! There are some sick people in the world who like to see other in pain or anguish; frankly I don’t think that those people can really be helped. However, I feel like these types of games are going to lead to an increase in the number of people that like putting people in these compromising situations.
I think that there needs to be an end to these types of games. It is disgusting and should not be accepted any where in the world. Because, as we well know what is available in one corner of the world is available in the other corner of the world. I just find these images so disturbing, and the fact that you can just go into a regular game store and have these games at your disposable or visible to any one.

I have never heard of such a game where the objective is to rape women. How could a person even think to create this game? I would like to meet the people who have designed such games and see what they are like. Do they have families? Daughters? Wives? They cannot have any morals or ethics. Words cannot even describe the shock I feel about this.
I am confused how such a game can be distributed to the public. I have played shooting games and the violence does not affect me. I do not like the newer games that are graphic and you watch the guys bleed to death. I like the older games like Goldeneye where the dead bodies disappear and there is no blood. Back to this rape game, how can it be fun to rape women? I can’t even imagine how my mom would react if she knew there were games like this. She does not like violent games but accepts them. She always said the games we play would affect our development. If they NEED to have games revolving around rape, the purpose should be to save the woman who is being assaulted. The game should promote being a “good guy”. It is scarier to think about the people who are playing this game and think that it is not bad.
In Japan, women are obviously not valued. I can’t believe their government will not intervene with the production of these games. Had it not been for the Internet, these games would not circulate as easily. Technology can have negative effects on our society. We take for granted that we can type and search anything in the world. I think the Internet has proven to be more harmful than good. Women are exploited and no one does anything about it.
If I were to walk into my male friends’ apartment and find them playing a game that the purpose of the game is to rape women I would have to revaluate our friendships. I would probably yell at them and lecture them on their values and morals. Seriously, what would our mothers say about such games? It is not that I am offended by such a game, but I am afraid of it. It is teaching our society that rape is not a bad thing. If real rapists were playing this game, it would encourage them to go out and do it in real life.
The British people that were interviewed made it really mad. They did not think these games are a bad thing. I just don’t get it. Yea, it is not okay to shoot people, but it’s better than raping women. In the shooting games, the objective is usually to kill the bad guys. I don’t know how a game could be fun watching other people suffer. What has happened to our society?
[Reply]
WOW! I am in complete shock and almost even speechless. This is completely outrageous. This type of game should NEVER be allowed to even be created. What type of sick person even thought to create a game like this? Do men really find it fun to sexually grope and rape women and think it is okay just because it’s a video game? If they think it is okay to play this game then they will subconsciously think that it is okay to act like this in real life. The Japanese government really needs to do something about this. What on earth is our world coming to?

Ah, RapeLay, the controversies that you generate… I actually had a discussion about this not too long ago. Hentai games, or “H Games” aren’t anything new and I’m surprised it took so long for people to even catch wind of this stuff. RapeLay, the game that CNN shows as its centerpiece in this story, in itself, is like four-years-old (I googled this, I didn’t know that number off the top of my head). Cartoon pornography, in the form of videos or even games, have been around forever in Japan. Why is it a big deal now? Because the internet allows for it to be shared? The internet has been around for years, too!
First of all, let’s take a step back and think about this for a moment. Yes, this genre of games can arguably be called offensive. Is it a problem? Probably not seeing as how most mainstream consumers of media would never touch anything like this… until CNN decides to show it on national television. Think about it: how many people own or have played an H-game? Not many. Only a small niche market exists for these types of games and they’re probably played by the same people you wouldn’t want to hang around anyways.
Another thing I’d like to bring up: why is everyone making a big fuss of this? This is no different than pornography except it’s digital (IE, no one is hurt in the making of this video) and it’s interactive. And how is it interactive? You click a button. Woooo… big deal. If you’re going to fight something like this, you have to fight the entire porn industry. So if you watch porn, in my mind, you cannot seriously stand up and say, “this is a problem.”
I have a serious problem with people suddenly picking up pitchforks over this topic because it’s a game. I am a gamer. Sure, I don’t play these types of games, but I do play a lot of games. I have grown up with people telling me that I’ll become some psychopathic killer because of the games I play and I have yet to take a rifle to the nearest school or mall. And there are a lot of idiots in the world that I really do not like. I have been playing video games since before I can remember (First game: Super Mario Brothers for the SNES). And I have been shooting people in these video games since I was in second grade (Golden Eye for the N64). So I don’t believe in the argument that video games turn people into monsters (or rapists in this case).
But something like this, I feel, isn’t or shouldn’t be a big deal. That is to say, if you’re willing to let the “Adult entertainment industry” thrive as it has. I just think that’s hypocritical. Because that’s basically what this is. A pornographic game. Also, I do believe that these games are only available to purchase by adults (IE: over 18). Those who take them from the internet: those are pirates that don’t pay for it.
I don’t want to say I support this game, but I do support the idea that games shouldn’t be censored or banned without reason. This game is offensive. Yes. But Grand Theft Auto pretty much promotes the idea of fucking hoes and then killing them to get your money back. This game is pornographic. Yes. But so is porn. In fact it is porn. That isn’t real. And doesn’t involve anyone humiliating themselves except for the voice actors who have to moan into a microphone.
Also, as for Sam asking if this is the type of game a guy would play with a bunch of guys and beer… I’d have to tell him that’s kinda… well, for lack of a better word: gay. It’s like a bunch of dudes watching porn together with beer. And no women. This is a type of game you play alone. Ashamed. And hopefully tell no one of. Just like porn. You watch it alone. Ashamed. And hopefully tell no one of it. (Except your partner if they’re into that sorta stuff). In fact this is porn. I think I mentioned that before? It’s just me.
I just find it irritating that people are attacking this because it’s a game and not because it’s porn. It’s. Freaking. Porn.
[Reply]
This game is absolutely ridiculous. I can’t believe there’s anybody that actually thought this game was going to be profitable. It’s a terrible message and I can’t believe the market for this game can be anywhere near a large enough amount to make any money. On the other hand though, the people who are getting extremely offended by this game, I mean, it’s only a video game. You call for this game to get banned in the United States when we already have games like Grand Theft Auto or Call of Duty, both being different types of shoot and kill games. In Grand Theft Auto, the whole entire purpose of the game is to basically hurt as many people as possible, since when did killing people become more acceptable than raping people. I am in no way saying this is a good game, or that it shouldn’t be banned, but if our society doesn’t mind have video games that have murder in them, I don’t know why everyone is so up in arms about this game. And the whole argument where they are saying that if people play this game, they may want to pursue this in real life. I don’t buy that in the least bit. I play a lot of video games and nothing in those games ever urges me to reenact the events portrayed in the game. I think that people playing the game who are not going to be tempted will just not be tempted at all. But if the people who have the mindset that they are going to perform what is going on in the game in real life, don’t you think that they may get some of it out of their system? I personally don’t think that this game should be banned. If someone doesn’t want to support the game, then just don’t buy it. I don’t think we as a society can be hypocrites when it comes to video games. There are so many games out there that aren’t very appropriate for kids or others, if we are going to ban this game, a lot more games would need to be banned to conform to the rules. I think that this game just needs to be rated in a way that you have to be older to purchase the game. That way the game has no influence on your life. I know I wasn’t allowed to play certain video games until I was old enough. All that needs to happen is parents needs to make sure they are paying attention to what their kids are doing on their video game systems. Because I don’t see any harm really other than influencing younger kids if they get their hands on it.

What terrifies me about a video game like this is the amount to which it will desensitize society to rape crimes. As games like this become more prevalent in society, persons become less and less concerned with the presence of them. When a company puts out a product that says “it’s okay to assault women in a virtual world”, it’s going to translate into something much worse. Clearly, this is despicable. There is very little need to discuss this aspect of the idea of this game. Some have argued that as a result of playing a game where you can virtually rape a woman, it will decrease the likelihood that the person will attempt to do so in real life. Wrong. I would bet my life that this is one hundred percent incorrect. By allowing people to relish in these thoughts and spend time imagining exactly how the encounter will play out, they are not releasing these thoughts from their minds, but learning how to better plan them. Sigmund Freud used to have a theory that in order to prevent persons from having a huge explosion of anger, they should release small amounts of their anger on a regular basis. Well, that theory was disputed and disproved a very long time ago. In fact, researchers found that those who regularly displayed their anger were more likely to “blow up”. So to those who argue that gaming programs like these could prevent rapists from taking actions outside the virtual world, it seems likely that it could result in the exact opposite. I’m all for free speech and for allowing the public to view whatever kinds of materials that they choose, but there has to be a limit as to what is made readily available to society. I do not think that games such as this should be sitting in an aisle at Walmart, but if there was an adult store that offered such games, it would be fairly similar to many of the products that they already offer. I do not support such trash but I can’t help but think that we already offer are just as bad. Can we really limit society to this and let the others go without passing the same judgments? I bet there are thousands upon thousands of people in American society who would claim to never want to play a game like this but privately wish to test it out. This does not mean that I think it’s a good idea to add something as perverted as this to our already sex-crazed society, but I do not think there is any way to truly and rightfully stop it. This could hurt a lot of people and frighten many of them as well, but its is a small price to pay for the freedoms that we have in this country.

Wow. I am totally appalled by this game. I am also completely disgusted that someone would ever think to invent something like this. Where are people’s morals? Does anyone out there think that this is okay? I am not a feminist by any means but from a woman’s perspective I feel so violated and grossed out by this. I also brought this topic up to a few of my guy friends to get their opinion on the matter and to my relief they agreed with me that this video game is unnecessary and inappropriate. It is bad enough that there are games out there that involve killing people to win. A game with the object being to rape young women just takes it too far. This strikes a chord with me because my 15 year old brother is very into video games and I would be very upset if I ever found him playing a game like that. There was a lot of controversy on the news a while back about violent video games and how they have the potential to make young children violent when they are older. The reason people thought this is because kids think that if they can play it in a game there is no harm in doing it in real life. Or if someone commits a murder in a video game and is able to out run the cops, kids think that they can do that in real life also. While this may or may not be true for all children it definitely might be true for some and lead them to a life of violent acts that could land them in jail. So who is to say that these rape video games will not have the same effect? Rape is not a joke by any stretch of the imagination and it is dangerous to expose children to these kinds of games at such an early age. If a child is really young they might not exactly know right from wrong yet and may think that this is an acceptable thing to do in society. The other part of this that really bothers me is that you can download these kinds of games off of the internet. These games are basically cartoon pornography and should be made illegal. It does not seem as if the Japanese government is doing much to stop the production of these awful games thus far. It has been a decent amount of time since these games have hit the shelves and the majority of them are still there. This needs to stop now because if games like these are around when I have children, it is not going to fly with me at all. I think that companies really need to reconsider the message that they are trying to send out to people all over the world because it could definitely be taken the wrong way.

Well this is interesting. It's hard to grasp the fact that before it was taken out of stores last year, a teen aged boy could walk into a Japanese video game store and buy this game. Rape is not something you want your children to see or know about, especially when presented in this light. What type of impression does it leave on a child who doesn't fully understand what is going on. I am curious if prior to being banned, if there was any type of age restriction on who could buy this game. I hope that there was but there was no mention of it in the story.
Rape is a serious issue that many women have been traumatized by. I can't imagine what it would be like if i were a rape victim and I saw this game. The fact that people were paying money to "play" would not only disgust me, but scare me as well. Its sad that the video clips from these games are still online for everyone to access, and even worse that people want to watch them. These videos have been viewed by hundreds of thousands of people on youtube. It's hard to imagine so many people wanting to watch videos that glorify raping woman and teenage girls.
Even though its so easy to take the stance that this game is disgusting and should be banned, in reality it is not too different than the violent video games that are so popular in America. Games ranging from street crime in cities to shooting enemies in war all show and promote murder. How are these games any better than a game that promotes rape. It seems like a double standard. I support the banning of the game in Japan but it makes me question why other games are allowed. Who decides which graphic and disturbing crimes should be legal to show in video games and which aren't? I don't understand how games where you shoot and stab people are considered acceptable content in our society, yet we judge Japan for allowing rape games to be sold for as long as it did. It's really not much of a stretch from what we already have here.
I think that if games promoting rape are banned then violent games promoting murder should also be banned. Or, alternatively I think that as long as long as murder video games are legal than technically rape games should as well. It makes no sense to me that they aren't treated the same way. Personally I do not like either of these games, but obviously a large part of society does, and it only makes sense for the issues to me handled in a similar matter.

I have seen so many comments about how people are shocked and surprised to see this video but I think this is kind of expected. I think I was just a combination of two major aspects in Japanese culture: pornography and video games. This not only ignores women’s but it also destroys ones morality. I mean this games is pretty much telling everyone that one should do whatever they sexual desires tell them to do. This is what all the animals expect humans pretty much do. They follow their instinct without their consciousness. They just act what their hormones tell them to do. We are different. Our conscious control our body to make us distinct from other animals. ‘
Japan is really open to sexual activities and many Japanese are generally more accepting to pornography (I think they call it adult videos in Japan). We can compare how much people spend money on pornography. In Japan, media is definitely influenced by the pornography and we can not deny the fact that it is major aspect of Japanese culture. Another major role that is contributing Japanese cultural aspect is the video games. In terms of economy, people spend tons of money to play games. They have developed many game tools (Wii, Xbox, etc) that people of all ages could enjoy. So game makers definitely researched to find aspects that more number of game players would be satisfies. So game programmer decided to combined pornography and video games to satisfy game players. Statistically speaking, there are more males playing games. So, game makers introduced new genre that most males are obsessed with: Sex. It became another source to fulfill their sexual fantasies.
People (same for all the video game players) like to experience the new things and their fantasies through their games. I am not saying that curiosity towards things that are new is bad. I am saying if that curiosity has wrong purpose than it is very problematic. It will be really problematic if video games are dealing with something that people would never do in real life. Raping and murdering is the worst thing a human could ever do. But in many video games people are performing such action to ‘experience new things’. Worst thing is that some people do not realize what they are doing in the game reflect real society. As I mentioned before video games and pornography is another tools to satisfy their “fantasy”. When people are expose to these ‘Fantasies’ for long time they forget what is real not real. Imagine kids or other young people, who do not have good sense of moral values are exposed to these games. It will not only destroy their moral values but it will also lessen their judgments. Imagine how much ‘rape game’ will affect people.

As Dr. Richards pointed out in his summary of thought about the CNN video link posted above, I agree with the statement that the development of these degrading, horrific video games lies in a more deeply rooted emotion that connects us all in a way no one can seem to figure out. How has this hatred spawned into such a violent affair that, in almost all cases, is directed towards sexual abuse and even the rape of women. I find it shocking to see the statistics about how many women will suffer from sexual misconduct, and even more shocking is how many women put up with it. Honestly, how many of you women can say that every time you've heard a catcall walking down the street you did nothing about it, said nothing about it, just kept walking? Or how about anytime a frat guy starts dancing with you just a little too closely or grabbing you a little too tightly and you just brush it off as 'he's drunk' and laugh it off? That's what I thought. Now, this particular subject hits an extremely personal chord with me. At the beginning of the semester, one of my closest friends and roommates was raped after she went out one night. The guys who did it was someone she considered a friend. I know as an outsider to the whole ordeal, the anger that arose from experiencing her pain and seeing any of her faith in humanity completely deteriorate was heartbreaking. To even begin to fathom that a video game was created where the sole purpose was to grope or repeatedly rape a woman, and consequently cause this destruction of her own, personal (albeit fictional) world is absolutely and truly disgusting, especially because I've been a part of that destruction and am still currently trying to help pick up the pieces. I propose that everything possible be done to prevent these games from ever circulating through the hands of gamers everywhere. The Japanese government needs to ban games like this from being created and therefore ending up on the Internet. Further, whoever approved these games to be download-able and therefore all over the Internet (if this was the case, I understand things like this video game can get "leaked") should realize how destructive these games can be to women and their families. Exactly as Dr. Richards stated, can you imagine any male sitting across from someone they truly care about or love knowing that this violence is directed to their loved ones? So why do males continually buy and play these games? Many excuse this as purely a form of entertainment, but just as the Grand Theft Auto phenomenon has imitated young American society's thoughts on felony, I believe rape and sexual is assault is so much worse, and hence teaching today's youth that this is acceptable behaviour. Where does it end!?
[Reply]
I thought some content in war video games was disturbing, but this is unreal. I can’t believe that this is actually a “game”. It makes no sense to me at all that this is entertainment. It is actually sick. Some people in previous post were explaining how this is just a result of “Japan” culture, and this is just astonishing to me. I guess it’s just an eye opener about how little women are regarded in Japan and are obviously thought of just as objects. The question I have is what does this teach the young Japanese generations who will play this game and continue this trend of thinking of rape as a social “norm”. It really is disgusting.
[Reply]
I think this game is a disgrace, as do most people I’m sure. I’m just not that surprised that Japan would release a game that graphic. I feel like in other cultures pornographic images are more public. They are used in commercials and magazines. The only thing is that this video game isn’t just pornographic its violently pornographic. The thing is you can Google this kind of pornography and nothing is done about that but selling it is frowned upon. In the video it said nothing about an age limit and it looked like they were in a space that was open to the public no matter the age. I don’t buy the reasoning that says it is an outlet for potential rapists. What the hell does that even mean? I’m sorry but this game is only going to fuel potential rapists and give current rapists the option to virtually rape someone when they aren’t out actually raping women. This game has nothing positive going for it, but most video games don’t. Grand Theft Auto, for example, has the option to beat up strippers. That’s offensive towards women too. Everything’s offensive towards women and the only people that care about women’s rights are women. Women’s right activists may be able to change some things for the better, and they have done a lot for women, but they aren’t going to change everything. You can’t please everyone. I don’t really understand why women’s rights activists from the U.S. are going ape shit about this game when it isn’t even being sold in the U.S. I know that just the fact that it exists means it is readily available online for anyone with an internet connection, but so is a lot of really foul and disgusting things. It just creeps me out that guys get off on forcing themselves on girls who obviously want nothing to do with them. It must come from years of never getting any and now they’re still not getting any because rape has become virtual. I could definitely see guys downloading this game with their friends and playing for fun. But isn’t that sort of gay? A bunch of guys sitting around getting turned on together while virtually harassing a woman is pretty pathetic and creepy. That’s what this game is though, pathetic and creepy. I mean I’m not saying that pornography is gross in general but when it comes to the physical and mental harassment of another human being than there is something wrong with that. I guess my whole point to this blog entry is that I believe that this game is wrong and it shouldn’t be sold in a regular gaming store with other games. It’s just going to condition people for a young age that this is an acceptable way to express sex, when it clearly isn’t.

I admit to being a gamer and to playing violent games all the time but this to me is disturbing. I follow the games industry pretty close for a lot of reasons and have heard of the Japanese games like this one and never really thought about it. but after seeing this game and the description I can say that it's still disturbing but not my place to sensor anyone's gaming as I hate that very thing in this country, books depict all manor of violence and we yell when someone says we should stop them from being printed why should games be any different? I would not play this game for its content but if a responsible adult in japan wants to buy it and never commits the act of rape did he or she really commit anything other than a bad choice? I can fully understand anyone who is offended by this game even outraged by it's mere existence but I urge everyone to remember that thought is an exercise. I'm not endorsing this kind of game but we don't have to live with the game nor do we allow such games in this country. I believe that violent video games are just fun for the sake of playing them not for the violence I play racing games and card games like uno as well and thoroughly enjoy them all. to me games are an exercise in being someone else or somewhere else so please don't judge the games we play as evil because they are violent judge the gamer for their real life actions I fully think of myself as a pacifist, who happens to play games that people get killed in, these are nothing more than subconscious fantasies that I work through in games. that is why I feel censorship is wrong in video games or any other media, parents need to control what their kids buy and they will never see the wrong kind of game, movie, or book till they are old enough thanks.

Wow that is crazy that video games have gone that far to have games that the goal is to rape i do not know how to feel about these games. there are so many games out there that have to do with violence prostitution and so many other issues. The game phenomena is so outrageous and makes so much money that if a game makes its fair share of profit will they stop producing that type of game, or series of games. I seriously do not know what to say about these video games that keep coming out and making huge profits off of consumers. Consumers should really pay attention to the message of the game before they buy it. Would you buy a game that its underlining message was to find someone and rape them? If you do i do not know what is going through your head when you bought the game in the first place. Hopefully people have better sense than that, but most people think it is just a game so what is the problem. If the whole world had that attitude then nothing would be done about anything in the world, and it would be a justice less place.
Games that promote violence are disturbing because there are people out there who have to go to war and face the killings daily. War is not a thing to play with by no means and making games about it to earn a profit is i don't know wrong. For example call of duty made a huge profit last year in the game industry, and it is about modern warfare. i personally do not like war games because my sister has been over seas in the war, and it is very close to home to think that people play these games for fun. This is not fun if it is you on the end shooting and killing someone because they will shoot you. I am not much of a gamer; i like the older games like pac man, or wii bowling. The market place for these types of games is enormous which is not hard to believe because many people like these types of games.
Now as for the games about rape are i think worse than the games about war, because to put women at a low demeaning level like the video games has placed women at is a bit much. Women are thought of in many countries as being lower than men which as a woman is crazy to think that we are put to such a low level. It is crazy that girls are thought of like and that they would come out with a game about raping women. I want game producers to come out with a game were the men get raped and then maybe they will do some thing about it then. Will men react to a game about men being raped, and actually take action?
[Reply]
Where do I begin? First off whoever created this game, or even had the mind state to think of such an atrocity in the gaming world must truly be a sick person. (Out of censorship, I won’t say what I originally had in mind.) There are so many things wrong with the concept of this game. What would be the goal of this game, if there is one in that matter? Who would be the consumers of this video game, and who would it appeal to? These are just a few questions that come to my mind.
Over the years, the cause of many cases involving criminal activity and violence, have been tracked back to video games. For example, many people think that the game “Grand Theft Auto” would influence players to go out and steal automobiles and shoot at the cops. I consider this true to a certain extent, on the basis that it’s been proven that video games may have a negative effect on the younger generation. Well when you take this into account, you can only imagine what kind of influences this Japanese video game may have on the players who are easily influenced by what they see. It is really disturbing to even think about it.
I really want to know, what kind of mind state was the guy who created this game in. Did he think that this would earn a plenty sum of profit? Or was it done for the creators own amusement, and to whomever else would enjoy this disgusting video game. There are several negative side effects that I can examine as an outcome of this game on the U.S. market; however, maybe it is possible to see the positive effects of this product.
I can only imagine that maybe this would be a safer way, for the mentally ill and psycho paths of today to cope with their disturbing and vile fetishes, such as stalking and sexual assault. It proves as a way to keep sexual offenders from going out and committing crime. For some people, video games can be a means of escaping reality in order to pursue and achieve the goals they would hardly be able to accomplish in the real world. I guess if they were to play the games instead, not only would it be a way to protect the innocent civilians who may become victims of these sexual offenders, but it would also provide safety for the sexual offender.
These are my views on the positive and negative side effects that may be caused by this Japanese hentai video game. I for one do not agree with it’s creation, and strongly believe that the Japanese government should put a stop to its production and sales.
[Reply]
Well… games like that are ridiculous, but sex culture in Japan is different. There are posters all over Japan that feature sexual content. Yet there is no national sex education program in Japan. I don’t think the government can do much in preventing the creation of that type of game, just limit who they can be sold to.
I can’t understand how the premise of the game came to the creator’s mind though… most games are used to create a form of escape into something “cooler” or whatever, but I can’t see the reason for wanting to go into a world like the one in the rape games. Besides the creator, what kind of person wants to play such games? It’s really a disturbing thought.
[Reply]
It really is a disgusting thought to think that people are sick enough to think of this stuff. I do not support it, but I honestly am not surprised by it either. I mean, you see all these movies that are just as sick and you watch it anyways. It is just like playing these video games, except in these video games, you are in control. Either way, it is taking part of watching these kinds of things. However, I do agree that this kind of video game is extremely sick. It is probably sicker than watching movies because the only reason why anyone would buy it is if someone is interested in imagining taking part in such a scenario. In movies, you just watch things happen. Why would anybody even want to think about taking part of this? I do not know, because I am not a sick person. What will this do to the video game world? There are kids who play these games with parents that do not even care about what they play because it is only "pretend".. but these games really do influence them. I hope things do not get too out of hand.
[Reply]
Part I:
I would have to agree with almost all of you that this video has certainly crossed the line. It is definitely appalling and the fact that CNN couldn’t even show the footage is really scary. I can’t even imagine that someone would ever consider making such a game. I mean think about all of the women who have been rape victims and are trying to move on from this horrible experience and then they see something so disrespectful and insulting such as this video game? How do you think they are going to feel? Rape is a serious crime and I think that the creators of this game and those who are endorsing it are taking it way too lightly or frankly just not even caring at all. It almost seems that as if to them rape is a turn which is an absolute disgusting thing to even think about.
[Reply]
First of all most people already know about this hential Asian drawings or some people call it porn, is not a new issue in life and I bet you a lot of rape cases were based on that game because if imagination comes to the point where people see movies about forced rape then they would find it natural to think that way and eventually act upon their thoughts, but that’s not the only problem, real porn probably has acting rape as well because obviously it attracts an audience of sickos who like that kind of thing, and we are doing nothing about either one because not even one rape case has been traced back to a movie because people don’t psychologically think they are doing it because they saw it in a movie or played it in a game.
[Reply]
Part II:
I also think it’s unacceptable that these types of video games are legal in Japan and that no government officials wanted to comment on this issue. Some of you mentioned that things like “I guess Japanese morals and culture vary greatly from ours.” Yes we me might have different cultures and values but what I have to say is that at the same time I don’t think that our morals are that far behind. Games like these might be legal in their countries, but it’s not like the U.S. is morally good. I mean we support countries that kill innocent people, and kill innocent civilians, but most people not really know about this because our media decides not to report it, so no we are not innocent either. It would be a very naïve thing to say that we have it right and all those other countries are just wrong. This obviously does not mean that I don’t condemn these violent video games. Although violent shooting video games are different from these rape video games, they are still a form of violence that I also think we should try to get rid of because like Sam commented I don’t think they are really creating any kind of contribution to society.
[Reply]
Part III:
It is also sad that these video games are all over the internet and that anyone can access it. I’m sure there are sick people in the U.S. who already play this video game, but I think and I hope that it won’t become popular here. There are way too many regulations and women’s rights groups that I think that anything would be done to eliminate these games. I also didn’t like the way CNN reported this because they only reported on what was happening and what these video games are like and that you can basically access them over the internet. This is obviously going to spark curiosity in some people, so I think that CNN should have included ways that we can try to stop this.

It has been quite long that since the Hentai culture has been established. I read a book regarding culture in Japan and one unique characteristic of this nation is that some wives actually let their husbands to have sex with a prostitute. In this example, it is easy to say the cultural conflict exist in terms of Western vs. Eastern. However, I believe that the issue cannot be easily determined to be that. Before doing that, the comparison between two nations is necessary.
In the video, there was a couple and the girl agreed that the game is not that offensive to her. It is true that criticizing one’s decision of choosing types of games that he or she plays would be limiting one’s freedom. Let’s just think of United States as well. Pornography is allowed and they are even divided by some categories – X, XX … (the increasing numbers of X means the more hardcore that the pornography would be) By the way, I learned this from Communications Law class, so don’t get me wrong. Back to our topic, Japanese pornography usually has mosaic on actors’ and actresses’ genitals while United States does not prohibit it. Furthermore, Oregon is known for having generosity toward obscene industry while Japan is famous for it as a nation. My question is that can we really make the criticism about it? I mean, obscene materials are consisting of the ‘real’ people in United States as well and some of them have stories including most kinds of situations as the Japanese game in the question had. Well, you can claim not all people watch it but only few. Same rule applies to the game in question on CNN. Not all Japanese people buy those kinds of games and play them, but few manias or so-called ‘O-ta-kus.’
No matter what the similarities and difference Japan and United States had in terms of obscenity, this news was like a bad sign of our future. The focus should be made not on whether the game is cool or reluctant but whether what does this incident mean. I do not know why but people are becoming immune to those from old times such as movies and games. Since they were not feeling enough pleasure, manufacturers or producers are trying to make their products as violent or sexual as possible to make the most profit as possible. Both United States and Japan are capitalist countries so they are not really there to be criticized. The most crucial part of this news is that those games can be transferred digitally – this means that anyone in the World who has internet access can play this game. This is bad for both manufacturers and us (I mean ‘we, the people’) since ‘they’ miss the potential customers and ‘we’ feel reluctant about it.

Wow, I cannot believe the story I have just seen, there is a rape game in Japan, this world is getting worse as the years progress. I understand that it is only a video game and it is not real life but this is a crazy game encouraging rape and sexual assault. It seems a little funny that people would do anything in a virtual world and people will defend it, but if done in real life you’re the worse person ever. I wonder who created the game and I want hear an interview from them on what made them create a game. Do they have something against females, is that the type of person they really want to be or is just all fun and games, just something to laugh about.
What surprises me the most is that it has been in the Japanese market for awhile so people are obviously buying it and enjoying the games? This game should scare the women in Japan because what is stopping the people who buy the game from attempting what they have done in the game in real life? This takes games to me to another level. To me this type of game is worse the violent shoot ‘em up action games.
Maybe the Japanese culture is used to this type of game, the report did say that the Japanese created games that may be seen as porno’s to other countries. It is hard to believe but this might be true. Or maybe it is just something to joke about, like the created just sat around a table and said “let’s make a game about raping women.” Whatever it may be it is wrong this game should raise concern for everyone. Everyone has a female relative and just imagining your something happen to your relative is painful and this game is sort of mocking the act of sexual assault and rape. I wonder how someone who has gotten raped would feel about this game. It is unbelievable that the world has come to this. Japan has been quite advance with their technology and before you know it this game may travel around the world. The same way a game like Grand Theft Auto did.
I also wonder can this be stopped Japan has no law against these type of things so I doubt it will be stopped, I guess only time will tell.

I have believed for a long time now that the emergence and popularity of video games amongst our youth encourages some of the violence that exists in the world today. It is outrageous to me that we would create such unnecessarily brutal and violent games for children to play. However, this clip shows a whole new unforeseeable level. I am utterly disgusted by the perverted idea behind it. I would love to sit down and talk with the man who created this. What is wrong with him that he sees this kind of brutality necessary? Is this the kind of violence we want to expose to children?
Whatever happened to the days of Donkey Kong and PacMan? Seriously!
This is not the first time that this train of thought has crossed my mind. As conservative as it may seem, I will flip through the station after station on TV shocked at the sexuality and violence on television. I do not want to be one of those adults who does not allow their children to watch any TV growing up, but at the same time why would I want them to see killing and torturing, rape, murder, explicit sex?
The thing that gets to me is that I am okay with these things being incorporated into television or movie plots, but just not to the extreme that Hollywood has to go to. Everything seems to be about the extreme nowadays. What more, these people that are taking it to the extreme are getting paid so much for it!
Another good example of this is in the explicit song lyrics in today’s music. It reminds me of a story that happened only a couple of years back. I was walking through Sports Authority one Sunday afternoon shopping with my parents. That Eminem song came on where he is talking about hanging himself in the closet. The song is full of swear words, derogatory towards his girlfriend, and primarily about suicide. This little grade school kid was roaming the isle on his own singing all the words! I couldn’t believe it! He knew every single lyric to this explicit song. I’m not sure that he was old enough to grasp the meaning behind it, but he was singing along anyway.
It makes me sick to think about how the average American family struggles to afford a nice summer vacation and someone like Eminem is swimming in wealth. Someone who sends out these kind of harsh messages that will influence the youth of America. I am not trying to justify the wealth distribution in America, but at least give that excessive pay to someone who is a good role model. It makes me cringe to think of all the kids who know all the words to his songs. I know it’s a lot more than just that little kid I saw in Sports Authority.

For instance, all those crazy war games, why would you want to shoot and kill “the enemy” in a gruesome way, you would never kill someone in real life, this sick fantasy and the intensity of interest some gamers have confuses me and I would love to receive a rational response for why people choose to play these games. If you are really that interested, enlist in the army and you may have your chance in the line of fire. These graphic games offered in Japan allow people to carry out fantasies which are not socially acceptable. I do not understand why they choose to play. I would never want to play a game like this but I do agree with Sam, I could definitely see a few guys sitting around, drinking some beers and playing this game. It would be labeled a “joke” but none the less it is a display of pretty gross behavior. Who created this game? Where did they get the concept for a game like this?
[Reply]
I was unsure whether I was bothered or indifferent to the response the female gamer from the UK had to the Japanese video game. On one hand I was annoyed that she would play the game, I thought she was a sicko for lack of better terms. Why would any emotionally healthy individual enjoy engaging in digital rape? These are the questions we are asking society. Pretty low. There are some pretty messed up people in this world.
[Reply]
I do not know what this world is coming to. There is plenty of controversy about other types of video games like games about violence and other types of real life simulation. With violence, people always that if you play violent video games you are more likely to display violent behavior in other situations. I think it all depends on the person. Some people are that simple minded to recreate the same situations they experience while playing a game. But on the other hand, some people are. So I understand the stresses they put on these topics. Its basically saying, if you play a shooting game, you will be more likely to shot other people.
When I was in high school, I played the Halo video game, which contains a lot of shooting violence. Never have I ever thought about shooting another person. So for me, that case is not true.
But on to the "game rape" topic. It is really absurd. I have never seen such a thing in my life. I knew what hentai was, but I thought it was just anime sex, not anime rape. I have been obviously mistaken and it is sad. I wonder what is going through these people's minds that they would ever do such a thing.
As with the video violence replication, I do not know if people will be more likely to rape women after playing these games. I think it is just a way for them to privately display their perverted needs. I highly doubt the people who play these games will actually go out and rape. And I think that people who actually rape will not play these games because the games are not real and it would not give them the sexual satisfaction that they crave.
I still think this game is sick though. Its disrespectful to women and it's just disgusting. I don't understand why a game about rape would be okay.

I am not exactly sure how to react to this blog. My first reaction was one of shock. I am not an avid video gamer nor do I enjoy video games but I realize that they are very popular. My boyfriend loves video games, he plays “Call of Duty” an several sports games. These games begin to annoy me after he plays for hours and I have seen how it captivates him and his friends. Too many times I have gone to a friend’s house to find at least one of the boys in front of the television or the computer playing some kind of video game, but never ones like these. Even though I was initially shocked to hear about these featured games, I was not completely surprised. I know this may sound contradictory but people in this world have some pretty messed up fetishes which can be carried out in the anonymity of video games. I am no psychologist but have heard how rape and the idea of it gives the aggressor an obvious control over his or her victim, this type of power seems addictive to some. The video game world truly puzzles me, why engage in activities that most would never dream of.

Wow. All I can say is wow. This is very disturbing to say the least. A video game about raping people, really? I can't believe anyone in ghere right mind could even think to make something like this. What does this accomplish and how possibly can it be fun. I understand that video games are in some ways supposed to be a sort of "gateway" to do things and experience things that you would not normally be able to do in real life. For example, not everyone gets to experience playing in the Major Leagues or street racing across the streets of Los Angeles in a modded car or even experience war in a certain sense. This is what video games have allowed us to do.
Now, an ongoing issue in the United States is whether or not the Grand Theft Auto series of games is moral. Many critics say that these type of games put violent thoughts and ideas in our childrens' minds. I will not disagree with this argument; however, the game is rated mature for a reason. Kids should not be playing this game. This is just like why children should not watch rated R movies. There is really no difference in that respect. Now, other than this argument, I don't see much wrong with these games. Yes, there is killing involved in these games, but it is just a video game and should have no effect on a your vies on real life.
Now, this game that has come out in Japan is a different story. This game is just plain disturbing. Who really has fun from raping a girl in a video game? Why would someone even think about doing this? Or, even more disturbing than that. Why would someone think about buying and playing this? There is enough sexual violence involved in world today, between sex slaves, prostitution, and things like rape, our society already has enough to fight when it comes to things like sexual violence. Now, what is this video game going to do for society in the long run? Will this give people an opportunity for people to that have urges to rape to not act on them or will this give people that would have never thought about it before actually begin to act and not believe it's a big deal? I don't know the answer to this question, but I do believe that this will give more people the wrong idea then the right idea. That part is very very obvious.
In conclusion, there is no other way to put this, but that this is very disturbing and sick and twisted that someone would even think about making this game let alone actually anyone buying it and playing it. I just don't get what would ever come good about playing this game.

This game is one of the most disgusting things I’ve ever seen. I cant even fathom the idea that people would actually want to buy this video game and play it. People are so sick for actually making this game. I’m just still confused how you can have a game where you basically hunt a woman down and rape her. I realize people who play video games don’t always go out there in the real world and do what they do in the video games, but it still it scary that people will play this game and get some sick ideas from it.
People wonder why our world is so messed up, and it could be part of it because of absolutely ridiculous games like this one. It is so offensive and demeaning. We have so many games in the U.S. that are completely messed up that people play, but nothing compared to this game. If you actually play this game there must be something wrong with you because there is no way someone can play this game and not think that something is wrong with it.
I am just still speechless after hearing about this game. And the point of the game is to rape woman? That is so scary to me. I feel that this game gives those sick people out there even more ways to make our world gross and barbaric. I just hope this game will never come here to the U.S. I hope that the U.S. would not be okay with it and I also hope that people wouldn’t ever buy it.
So many different problems can be caused because of this game. One thing that actually really bothers me about this game is that young children could be watching someone play it, or actually play it themselves. This can put disturbing thoughts in young children’s minds. This can cause them to want to actually do what they see in the games. This game can cause much harm to woman and be very unsafe.
I understand that Grand Theft Auto is a very bad game too but it’s not like this at all. Yeah you pick up hookers in the game and have sex with them, but it’s not like this Japanese game by any means. Also a lot of other games people play involves guns and shooting people but it’s still different. The Japanese gaming world has gone way to far with this game and it is very sickening.
This Japanese rape game should be prohibited. No one in any country should ever be allowed to buy this game. Japan should really reconsider this game and they should have to stop making it. The Japanese government needs to take action to do something so this can change.

Yea for me. I"m really am not a fan of this game like really.. why would make a game of this sort out of all the different categories in the world. One this game is really stupid and ignorant. two this would probably only go out to people that would actually want to rape girls and are sick. This game can also be puttinn up a stereotype that all asian women are easy and whores so thats why it is easy to rape them. Also cause the fact that in china women have no say on anything. but like one guy said this game is not in america. It is being sold in China' so why are we so hyped on it". America is always getting into others business and not focusing on our own. Anyway just like all of these real life game like Call of Duty and war games that resemble actual historic events. It would be perfectly fine for the japanese to make a game of the Battle of Pearl Harbour with a level where you have fly all 10 of your planes into a the destroyer boat. So when we come out with games like Grand theft auto which resembles americas problems and look a like then china can come out with something that often goes on in their country. There has been much uproar about the video games in the U.S., but after viewing this video it is clear to see that these types of games have been around for a longer amount of time then some of the graphic video games in the U.S. I also think that this may say a little something about the Japanese people and culture. For years, these games have been on the market where people have routinely bought and sold these video games from the market and have condoned the actions of these video games. I am firmly against the actions and depictions of these video games, but I would like to see if rape and violent acts have gone up in the Japanese society. There are many studies and research that has been done to report the negative effects of video games on individuals’ behavior. This would serve as a perfect test and experiment. The only reason we are just now finding out about these games is because of the internet and the enhancement of globalization. So all in all I think that this game is full of it and it really should be taken of the market if it actually reached the U.S cause this is really like having a game where you can kill all jewish people or enslave all black people. I hope this is not what are country has come to!

I want to begin this post by saying that I do not support games like the ones portrayed in the video. However, it is important to remember that in our own Constitution (for those of us that are US citizens), we guarantee our citizens the right to free speech. I realize that the games we are discussing here are based in Japan, but still, I think that everyone should be entitled to freedom of speech, expression, and the likes. Although I think the concept of the game is wrong, I cannot knock the makers of the game because they have not done anything wrong. It would be a problem if the game was somehow subliminally encouraging players to rape women, but it seems as though the games are just that; games. It would be equally as sensible to attempt to ban movies, literature, or jokes that concern rape. Of course they are off color and in bad taste, but nobody is being harmed and nobody is sexually assaulted as a result. I think that as long as nobody takes these things seriously, they are none of our concern. You should just as well ban video games like Halo and Gears of War because they promote murder and violence. There is such a difference between games and reality, and that is why the right to free speech exists. People are not so easily influenced that they will rape someone as a result of playing a video game centered on rape. Likewise, people are not so easily influenced that they will kill people as a result of playing a video game centered on killing. One only needs to go as far as a television to see proof of this. I’m sure that everyone has seen the Wikileaks video “Collateral Murder.” This footage sparked quite a bit of controversy. People all over the country were shocked and appalled, but Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has game play that looks almost identical to “Collateral Murder.” Some (such as Sam) would argue that this is a problem, and people should be reacting just as much to Call of Duty. However, I believe that people can accurately make distinctions between games and reality. If someone is going to commit a crime as heinous as rape, or mass murder of civilians, they are going to do it regardless of if they play a video game or not. Something as trivial as a video game will not cause people to all of a sudden snap and begin their lives as sexual deviants and mass murderers. I love Call of Duty, I play it all the time, but I am never going to run around with an assault rifle shooting people. Although I would never play a “rape game,” who am I to tell others not to when I am allowed to play my shooting games?

I'm not going to slam the Japanese because we already did in World War two. That being said I've been to Japan and I do not think it is racist to say that they are into some weird shit. Why should CNN advocate that this game be banned…obviously there is a sexually deprived market that purchases this stuff…and if they can't buy this foolish game they're still going to be weird and find other strange shit on the internet as the internet is endless and nearly impossible to regulate.
I'm a bit indifferent over this issue. I don't play video games or rape people–I don't find rape entertaining either. This is just another example of the extincting of "taboo". It's a sick world and I'm contemplating not having children for that reason. Perhaps I'll adopt a Japanese child and teach him/her about Jesus and how rape is wrong and what not…I could also tell the that video games and masturbation make you go blind (that's what my folks did)
In conclusion-The Japanese inflated video game designers are looking for the next big thing to sell-whether it be rape or something worse(if that's possible) CNN is looking for a shocking story to sell–rape gets peoples attention-sex sells etc. Everyone one wins-capitalism prevails. Think about it. Do you want to live in a world with a loose grip on perversion? Or under a tyrant who cuts your hand off for the mere mention of unconventional sex and monitors your God given sleezy internet rights.

Dude, there have always been sick people in the world, and people are no sicker than they were 20 or 2,000 years ago. This is just a modernization of the depravity that has always been around. One of the first games released was a game where you played as General Custer raping a Native American woman tied to a pole. Its messed up, but bringing media attention to it like this does no one any favors. It only legitimizes the work of some messed up game developer, who probably wanted the controversy anyway. Do you think he really didn’t expect any? From what I’ve heard this game has been around for a few years, and CNN recently just caught wind of it and wanted to create a “breaking” story out of old news.

This video game depicts everything that America has been working again for 50 plus years. The men players want to rape and kill the woman for firing him from his job, that truly disgusts me. I do not see the goal at the end of this video and this game ever being created. As a parent, I would never purchase this game or this type of game for my child. A parent buying this for a child promotes this type of behavior towards women, and men for that matter. It is sad that Japan is one of the world powerhouses now and they are promoting morals and ideals such as these. As long as no games such as these enter America I can still feel happy that we have higher morals and standards then other countries-march 12

I think this video game is very troubling and outrageous. Things like this should not be allowed to be sold or even made, even though I know that is impossible to regulate. People who say these video games do not make people commit these crimes do not make a valid point. First of all there have been studies which prove violent television and video games do affect those who watch and play them. Also, the very nature of the game pokes fun at something that is a serious crime. Rape is no laughing matter. Rape victims have serious long-term side effects and all this video game does is make rape look fun and the cool thing to do. Why would we want to promote this horrific crime that affects so many people not only in the United States but throughout the whole entire world? This video game makes it look like rape has no consequences for the victim or the offender, which obviously is not the case, especially for the victim. There are real victims of rape and this video game branches off from reality and shows an unrealistic view of the crime. If a little boy or girl finds this game and plays it, you cannot deny that it would not affect them even a little bit. A thing like this perpetuates the rape myths that haunt our society today and allow these tragedies to continue. Rape myths are a huge problem today, and have always been. This video shows rape as a small problem that does not need to be addressed or regulated. This video game also continues to portray women as liking to be raped and constantly wanting sex. In the media, women are seen as sex crazed animals that enjoy being dominated and forced to have sex. Women sell their sexual appeal in order to achieve fame and popularity. This is seen in many music videos and stars today. For example, Brittany Spears who became slutty and once she did because a superstar with many more fans than before. The media portrays men as these tough, masculine creatures who can get as many girls as they want. Video games, like this, only serve to enhance the double standard of women; women should be are called prudes if they do not have sex but are called whores if they do. This video also portrays rape and violence as something good and fun, when in reality it is a horrific crime that forever haunts the victim. It is bad enough to make music videos using women’s sex appeal, but when someone actually plays a video game where the goal of the game is to rape a woman in order to get back at her for what she did, that goes too far. In a video game it is like one is actually doing the action, in this case the raping, and in a sense teaching people how to rape. I am sure that people who have experienced a sexual assault or rape would think this game is harmful and outrageous. Those who have loved ones who have been raped I’m sure who feel the same. If you have no experience with rape or sexual assault it is hard to picture how damaging a game like this could be, however, no matter whether you have experienced it or not I do not understand how something as horrible as rape can be taken so lightly.

The first thing that I’d like to say is that I would never even think if downloading this game to play it just to see. I feel that rape is a very serious matter in which we shouldn’t even play around with the idea, as well as with the shooting games. I feel that there are differences among the shooting games and these types of “rape the innocent women” games. In a shooting game for what I have realized, because I personally do not play those games but in the shooting games it is like fictional events that could really not happen in real life. For the most part it’s always like creatures that aren’t real and you are shooting monsters or if it is real people they are in fictional settings and shooting at animals or stuff like that. This game in the other hand is more real. These women are in the subway, which happens every day women go into the subway all day every day. And the fact that the only way to win in the game is to rape, that is just encouraging the people who are playing it to go ahead and do it so they can win. That is not helping at all with morality. And I understand that you should not really tell people what to and not do, but I feel that there should be boundaries in which things should be stopped. I understand that it is an issue in another country but these things are all over the internet, I am sure some child will get their hands on it and what will that be teaching them. I just find it to be so disturbing. I personally feel that rape is possibly the worst thing you could do to a woman and I don’t feel it is something that can be joked with or about. Then we have the women who aren’t offended by it. I think that when women watch or even play games like this it is just supporting the people who are making and playing it. I feel that women help expose things like these that are just bringing us further down and then we want to fight to be treated as equals. When a woman sees things like this, at least in my opinion, I feel that they should get mad and express why it is not something to joke about. There are little girls in these games and there are sick people out these enjoying the game, what that is telling me is that if they had the opportunity they would do the things in the game to the real thing or that they want to but can’t. But how long is that going to last, I feel that they would only last for a certain amount of time until they get the urge to do it to the real thing. I don’t support games like these where violence is the main objective.

Part I: I think that this is a pretty sick and twisted video game for sure. Japan is kind of notorious for such inappropiate things though. For example, until just recently they used to sell used women's underwear in vending machines. YES VENDING MACHINES. I think that this is something to get worked up about because of the content. Rape is a very sensitive topic especially when it involves young children and teens. I think that rape is a very serious matter and one of the things that they should warn people about in the description on a game or movie. Other than that i dont think people should be complaing about video games and violent movies.
[Reply]
Part II: For example there is no reason to get all worked up about the rape scene in The Last House on the Left. The MPAA rating and the description of why the movie was rated as such is written on the back of the movie. It reads as such "Rated R for sadistic brutal violence including a rape and disturbing images, language, nudity and some drug use. " Reading this could have saved a ruined night for someone and all of their friends. As for the rest of the movies that include extreme forms of violence and such; it is just the popular design for a movie these days. If it sells tickets people will continue to make the films. Movies are made to entertain and for most movies that is their sole purpose. Directors like Quentin Tarantino actually make pretty decent movies for the most part. Inglorious Basterds is an amazing movie with a really good story to go with it. His style of violence and blood ever since his Kill Bill series draws in his audience. I think society will be dealing with violence in video games and movies for a good while yet. Its what the majority of people in the current era enjoy.
[Reply]
Part III: Everything in this era is different then past eras obviously. An example is the style of video games. When my mom grew up video games had just started with atari so she was playing super old school games like galatica. Then during the beginning of my childhood was mario brothers and donkey kong on super nitenedo later leading to the first playstation and eventually xbox. This is when I first noticed the introduction of video games with violence. Games like resident evil and duke nukem64 are some that I remember. Hopefully the topics discussed wont exceed the extremities that they have already come to because I do think that the new pop culture of things is getting “dumbed” down. A prime example is current tv shows like Jersey Shore, 16 and Pregnant and about any other of the shows on MTV. I can actually remember when it used to actually play music almost all day. But in conclusion I think that maybe as generations go on things will change and their will be different issues argued about and we will all be the old people complaing about all the young kids.

Well well well where can we start? I guess first of this game is really not ok. But at the same time I’m being a hypocrite, ill touch on that later. Any who, this game is highly ridiculous, how can you go around groping girls in a videogame, with the intentions of later raping them or bringing them in the situation of rape. Can such a game tell you about a person, honestly yes and no. The reasoning behind this is that for someone to actually sit down and ENJOY the game with a passion, I don’t know how I feel about that. To me that seems like you’re the type of person to actually experiment with what goes on in the game. When you think about it, there have been many girls and woman who have been raped in society. The reason as to why we don’t think there’s so many is because these victims don’t speak up. I’m not asking this woman to speak, I’m definitely not but I’m just making the point is that these woman have been emotionally scarred beyond my comprehension. If you would stop to think about that, would you really play such a game or even think about making it. It just boggles my mind how heartless or soulless people can be. On the other hand, to actually speak up for the people who find pleasure in it may find it as a way to control those hidden urges and find it as a means to prevent themselves from committing the crime. So I can see if this game was initially mass produced for therapeutic use then I wouldn’t have a problem with it, reduce the chances of women getting raped and helping them live their lives with one less thing to fear about. Now let’s open our minds here, video games are a production of the society in which it came. Now I’m not saying that males in Japan go around raping women, no. I’m saying that if you’re familiar with japans history you would see why such a game doesn’t seem out of the ordinary. Not to give you a whole history lesson but here’s a short synopsis; Japan is very open with sexuality. Cartoons (television in general), comics, clothing etc can have material known as hentai (Japanese porn) attached to them. So to the society itself it seems like another sexual themed game in their eyes. So this is where my hypocrisy comes in. Say for America, our society behind the smoke and mirrors of good old’ America, is the violence, drugs, sex, etc that surrounds it. So our video games do tend to highlight these areas. The biggest example is grand theft auto. Here’s a game that definitely highlights these attributes of America. Me personally I like the games, but I’m not saying I like to go around killing people for fun, stealing cars, and having sex with prostitutes/strippers. So I’m just trying to say that before bashing video games, we must find out where it’s coming from in the first place then make judgment.

This is out of control. The fact that these people make games solely for the purpose of rape is almost kind of sad. I know that the Japanese market makes a lot of money off of pornographic material called Hentai in which they have cartoon characters having sex. While this makes a ton of money for the country, it is also promoting these sexual fantasies to go further and further. These sick people play a game and follow a girl around on a subway and take her clothes off and grope her. I, as an American, do not understand what these people are getting out of this. Apparently this fantasy is huge over in Asia. I play video games for fun and excitement, not to rape people and cause harm. But who is to say that the people who play these games do not get fun and excitement out of them? This is what people like over there so why should they need to stop? As long as no actual rape is going on and they can get their excitement on a computer screen and not in the streets then I am fine with it. Games in America such as Grand Theft Auto and Call of Duty depict gruesome killings in real life settings and also contain graphic images and vulgar language. The fact that people are not running around the cities with guns and blowing cars up and murdering people is safe enough for me to say that we are okay. Yes some video games can seem to go overboard with their gameplay but that is why it is a video game. It is supposed to be a game that allows you to do things you can not ordinarily do in real life. We cant lose sight of what a video game is here. It is only the 1% of people who play these games that may take it for real. Those people are sad cases because they can not distinguish reality from a video game. This does not mean that games should be taken off the shelf. I am by no means agreeing with the games that the sole purpose is to rape girls in. I think that those people in Japan need to rethink what they are selling, but it is not hurting anyone unless they can show that this is causing people to do it in real time. This is no different than the pornographic material that they sell, only in this version you control what happens. These people like to get off to this stuff, no one can say it is wrong. As gruesome and sad as it is, it is still only a video game and people need to realize that.
